Box-Shaped Teacups

Hakogata Yunomi

These were produced beginning in the later Edo period, in the latter half of the 18th century. In silhouette they are square- or rectangular-shaped, giving them the name “box-shaped.”

These teacups are thrown on the potter’s wheel from a flat disk. They are notable for their flared bases.
